Backtracking Bollywood.
Watching a Bollywood movie, a decade after it's release, gives you new perspective.
It shows that most of the hype that the movie is surrounded with, unless it is one of those timeless classics, actually halts and fades off in its own form with time.
I noticed this whilst watching "Veer- Zaara" with my no-bollywood-fan Boyfriend. He actually gave a very good perspective and remark after the movie ended. Since it was one of my favorite movies of all times, and still is, I asked him what I thought of it. He simply said , "Well it's a very interesting plot and it was certainly a nice movie. I just wish there were less songs.. Could have been more intense and to-the-point then."
Very true. I actually realized that no matter how beautiful the songs were, they took you temporarily away from the main issues discussed on the plot.
And worse, it was sad when I realised that although when the movie was released we were sentimentally shaken and emotionally drowning in the epic form of love that Yash Chpra ji created, reality would be looking at it in a bit of a "erm, really?" kind of way. It hit me most when my boyfriend said. "Wow..such waste of life, youth and energy..! All because Raza Shirazi did not even think of communicating the truth with Veer and Zaara. Can anyone be so numb to one's own conscience? Even when he must have been aged himself!" My jaw dropped when it hit me how insensitive the villain of the story was in that case..

Some other ten-year-old movies I watched a while ago, showed me how easily the creators have dragged the plot, in such a way that they could fill up the 3 hour due time of a traditional Bollywood movie. (I'm glad that they have reduced the length of songs and got rid off the unnecessary dragging in the recent movies.)
Shortly said, sometimes I feel stupid having liked some of those movies released a decade ago, since watching them now, show that most of them had no plot at all. Some of them had very naive dialog, the dramatic scenes were slightly(or more) overacted, and the climax always had the cast line up on a long shot :)
Good old Bollywood movies. I will continue to have good memories with them. They are just proof that times change, people change, and requirements change. What once was sophisticated is now gaudy, what once was precious is now just common. However, yes, the movies keep you going- inspiring you, exhilarating you and making you feel good about life overall.
