11.06.2009 UOK RIOT- bits and pieces of the story the MEDIA forgot to metion
First and foremost I have to confess I was not an eye witness in yesterday's riot, these are bits and pieces of the story as I heard from my fellow UOK undergrads who were trapped inside the uni yesterday. All the eye witnesses are still recovering from the shock they went through and have very emotional outbursts whenever someone mentions about yesterday's riot which in my opinion is the worst riot in UOK history ever.
On my part, yesterday was a crucial day v had a presentation worth 20% n i was planning to leave home around 11 and with the news of rioting i called one of my friends up to see how things are. My friend who is usually calm and collected on a day to day basis went on talking non stop about how their boarding patron had to drop them to the faculty entrance in his vehicle where as on a normal day they would walk that particular distance and how violent the so called 'villagers' been the night before.
A crucial juncture in the rioting had been a black prado hitting a second year undergrad around 11.30 p.m. on the Kandy Road the night before, the eye witnesses claim the accident was brutal as the victim had landed a few yards away from the prado after it had hit him. Afterwards a mob had apprently attacked the prado, which presumably belonged to a very moronically influential man when it comes to law and order in the Kelaniya suburbs.
I got on the bus yesterday because riots are a not a new thing in UOK and for the lecturers that is not a good enough excuse to cancel an assignment. Halfway through the bus ride one of my friends who was supposed to do the presentation along with me called to say that she is too scared to come out of the boarding let alone come to uni because the mob was allegedly attacking boardings, what the hostel residents went through I can't imagine and I have still not been able talk to any of the hostlers. To me when my friend called yesterday the real gravity of the situation had still not occured so I casually said "Right, I will go to one of those boutiques at the foot of the UOK hill and wait till someone I know comes along so I can go with them" and my friend's response was, "No way in or out of the university and are u crazy? don't come anywhere near the university they are attacking and beating any and every person whom they assume to be an undergrad."
Then came the news that lecturers had actually sealed the departments and were protecting undergrads from the so called 'villagers' who had entered the university premises with swords, sickles, batons and all sorts of other aromour which we usually see thugs carrying in Hindi movies.
Eventually the police and the riot control had arrived to control the mobs because the so called 'villagers' were not letting the 500 undergrads trapped inside university leave. CTB busses have come to all faculties for pick up and the girls have been sent out first with the boys staying behind. My friends who were tapped inside these buses say they were packed like sardine cans, the buses' destinations have been Fort, Borella and Peliyagoda and though out the transportation process they have been attacked with stones and all sorts of numerously unbelivable objects.
One of my friends related that when she called another friend of ours who was trapped inside one of these buses, the girls had been screaming their guts off because the so called 'villagers' had been verbally abusing them, which included rape threats. A girl in that particular bus has had a seven inch long piece of glass go through her head as a result of the so called 'villagers' attacking the shutters of the bus. The bus had directly gone to the accident ward to admit her and the girl had been crying all the time. The situation has been very violent as my friends who were trapped sighs in relief saying "mara ugulakin galawuna nulen."
This is only bits and pieces of the story as I heard it. I hope my friends will continue to write and say wat actually happened. To add to the viloent streak of yesterday's events, the so called moronicly influential man had gone on electronic media to say he will murder the UOK undergrads.
UOK is such a wonderful place I don't know why things always have to go the wrong way and portray it as a hell when for many of us who have ate, lived and breated there UOK is a heaven.

Indi, Kumudu , Saumya and Chavi wr trapped inside the buses and they were attacked violently by ppl who wr trying to smash the buses down!
some people still think this is a big joke! and it's NOT funny!
i escaped outta uni with another 1st yr (uttara) with extreme difficulty and only cz I fortunately had a formal-looking top with me,and ammee gave me her handbag.!! While I came down we all pretended that we wr outsiders. It would have been terrible if I was still wearing my french club tshirt and had my book bag!!People wr waiting with stones and huge rocks in thier hands to hit any university student who appear infront of them!!
I would also like to mention that THIS incident completely made me realize who my true friends are and also who take anyone's life for granted..!!- Anu

I just got a call from Kavi aiya. He , Chatura aiya and Patum had escaped with extreme difficulty outta boarding places!! Trucks full of thugs had been circling the area looking for university students!! minutes after they left, ppl in masks had come looking for them and apparently they left just on tym!!
PEOPLE, MAKE THIS ARTICLE AND COMMENTS PUBLIC ASAP!!Let ppl know wots really happening! someone try to contact the student's union and ask them to clarify wot happend!! lets all pls get together and face this calamity to make our uni safe again.
One small request. EVERYbody that I saw and met , even media and relevant authorities are AGAINST us!
None of the media show how brutally the buses wr attcked! we are ALL ALONE!! pls take steps not to get into a SINGLE shop around uni premises and we shall see how the ppl survive without OUR money!!
make our experience known to every single person around us as much as possible!!!

I heard about the terrible incident and being shocked. Though clashes in UOK is not much of news, this incident somehow has made everything worse. I was trying to reach my friends and online articles, and got hold of some pictures.. my gosh.. awful situation near the university. My concern is that this might not just end here.. When they start the university once again, these (in)humans will surely come to satisfy their thirst by torturing innocent university students, and surely the girls would be easy picks..
Guys.. please take care and make sure you all take the RIGHT action against this.

Exactly,I saw the way those thugs behaved. The society seems to be even more corrupted after defeating terrorists. How come the police just watch these thugs,I would say "villagers" hit the buses where there were only girls inside. 100s of girls got injured. Why nobody's talking about that?
I went to the hospital with injured girls. Now the media says it's better to open a Faculty of Fights inside the University.I have never seen or heard any such incident where girls being beaten up like this.Where are all the women rights? Who gave the power for these villagers to do these things?
Instead of solving the problem, media is putting salt to the wound by saying that it's all the university students' fault and the situation has become even worst because they are provoking these thugs or "villagers" against all th undergraduates.
If we do not take action against this injustice our future generation will also have to suffer the consequences. What we ask for is just "JUSTICE".

Yes. And if we don't do anything about this ASAP , another era like the JVP-killings would be started where ppl would just randomly kill any undergraduate!!!

the girls in the buses have come under the seats like our cricket team, they say they were being stoned since tyre junction and they only lifted their heads when they reached Sugathadasa Stadium and the girls with blood on their clothes had to call their parents to come and pick up them from Fort in vehicles cz going in buses with blood stains was out of the question
this seems like a dream or a film

yes..chami...what u r saying is very true...and nobody does mention the reason for ths much of brutality against UOK undergrads...and they keep blaming the whole UOK i dnt knw for what....this is the mudeorus impact of stinking politics...And Indi,Kumudu,Chavi and I took a badly injured first year to the accident ward and she had a terrible deepwound on her head..a sharp egded stone had hit her head directli i actually dnt kn wt they expect frm ths kind of brutality....and this girl is frm matara n she has no idea abt the city or its way of life..we found her sitting in the bus...blood soked...too shoked to speak...and when took the hospital she had to stay there cs of her injury...she was crying continuously..no wonder...wothout prents or any person to be with her at the momnt of tragdy...and we had to leave this innocent girl on a strecher with the blood soaked blouse and the denim...only cloths she had at the moment..this z realy realy terrible.......extremly shokin....

im too angry to talk abt wt happened yesterday and most of al hw ppl make stories abt dis, making UOK students as a bunch of aimless fighting puppets whereas we were the ones who actually saw wt happened and the amount of thugs involved (and they were NT uni students!!!)
chami pls publish ur article as much as u cn and i don't want 2 sound too idealistic abt dis guys bt is there anyway dat we can mak a collective requset 2 da president to open uni asap
as someone living nearby i cn say pretty wel dat da villagers won't let uni to b openend anytim soon
they feel quite heroic abt their thuggery actions,,, especially those viriless thugs, police and tri- shaw drivers who felt too happy to beat girls and utter extreme filth to their faces

just now saw yesterday's Rupavahini news. This new was their LAST segment in local news, and that too they said that Uni students wr secured and escorted SAFELY out of uni!!! ANd they also said Mervin Silva came and SOLVED the problem!! wot happened was the total opposite!!!
We should actually complain to the President himself!!!

Damn it...! This is terrible!
ReplyDeleteWhen i saw some students throwing stones at each other in our uni i thought they were inhuman! But what would i say for these?
The girls getting attcked clearly shows some points:
1.This was not a doing of UOK students. No uni people will even say a word to a girl. It's simply unimaginable.
2.To attck a harmless girl, someone has to be extreamly wild. This gives the state of mind of the mob ----terrorists are much better than this---Please count your male friends to see all are there! I don't think they'll spare a male!
3.Never go to uni suburbs for months!
Starving them is a good answer.... The business won't stand a month without you people.
And tell that mervin silva to ..... off. He's popular not to solve peoblems, but to start them.
hey thank u. But it WASNT uni students who beat up the girls in buses!! this was a clash between the "apparent" villagers(who of cz wr thugs of mervin)
ReplyDeleteand uni students. While the uni girls were escorted outta uni in buses, they smashed the buses like animals!! worst than animals actually!!
we have exams coming up next month!!!!
